Guiding Principles

Ambler Food Co-op and Weavers Way Co-op

[This is not intended to serve as a legally binding contract on either co-op, but rather a description of agreed-upon principles.]

Whereas Ambler Food Co-op and Weavers Way Co-op mutually seek to build the cooperative movement and establish a successful cooperatively-owned and operated grocery store in Ambler that will serve the local community of the Ambler and its surrounding neighborhoods;

Whereas the Missions of Ambler Food Co-op and Weavers Way Co-op are consistent with one another and yet necessarily require enactment on a very local level within our communities;

Whereas Ambler Food Co-op and Weavers Way may seek a formal partnership so as to achieve these mutually-held goals;

Therefore, each Cooperative shall be directed in its actions by the following “Guiding Principles” if and when a partnership ensues:

Principle 1: The membership and representative leaders of the Ambler Food Co-op shall be actively engaged in the development process of opening a new store in Ambler, so as to insure that the new store reflects the distinctive nature of the Ambler community, and to continue to build strong, local member involvement in the Co-op.

Plan: Until the new co-op store is open in Ambler, the Ambler Food Co-op shall be represented within Weavers Way by an Advisory Committee to be established and run by Ambler-area representatives. Weavers Way shall involve Ambler members as deeply as possible in every aspect of development of the new store and membership.

Principle 2: Ambler Food Co-op members shall be eligible to become integrated into Weavers Way's governance structure and enjoy the rights and privileges of running for the Weavers Way Board of Directors.

Principle 3: Ambler Food Co-op members shall be given the full privileges of a Weavers Way member.

  • Any new or existing Ambler Food Co-op member who wishes to pay their equity on Weavers Way’s payment plan of $40/year minimum shall be given the option to do so. However, all potential new members shall continue to be encouraged to pay their equity in full or on a faster payment schedule as has been the practice of Ambler Food Co-op so as to provide the needed start-up capital.
  • Volunteers who serve on Ambler Food Co-op committees shall be recognized as Weavers Way “Working Members” and enjoy the discount it provides.

Any Ambler Food Co-op member who is separately a Weavers Way member and vice versa shall be given the option of a refund of any equity paid over $400 as allowable by law and the Bylaws of Weavers Way Co-op, or to consider such excess equity a donation to the project of establishing the store in Ambler.
